Abstract

As teacher education programs in higher education institutions expand their online programs, a planned approach to quality assurance is essential to scale quality. Sloan Consortium’s time-tested Five Pillars of Quality Online Education model has had widespread use for the past 10 years as a framework for design, evaluation and quality. In 2012, Lone Star College increased their online offerings by more than 26 percent. To scale quality, the institution adopted the Five Pillars of Quality Online Education model to create a “Quality by Design” framework. Like the Sloan Model, the Lone Star model creates quality standards and metrics in the areas of Access, Effectiveness, Faculty Satisfaction, Scale, and Student Satisfaction. This paper briefly introduces this model.
